 Historical Note

In 1928, the Ohio State University director of athletics, Lynn St. John, recommended the construction of two golf courses at the University. The two 18-hole courses bear the names "The Scarlet" and "The Gray." British golf course architect Alister MacKenzie designed both courses. The Scarlet was built in 1938, using Works Progress Administration labor during the Great Depression. Ohio State University hosted the first women’s collegiate golf championship in 1941 on The Scarlet. The Gray, a shorter course, finished construction in 1940. As of 2017, the courses have hosted numerous tournament events and are operated by the semi-private Ohio State University Golf Club.

 Scope and Contents

The Ohio State University Golf Club Records contain architectural documents related to the University's two golf courses, including blueprints, maps, and drawings, and materials on the irrigation of the courses, including equipment specifications, water tests and schedules, correspondence, and plans. There are also materials on the dedication and history of the course, committee materials, and informational publications produced by the University Golf Club. The materials date from 1925-2008.
