 Biographical Note

Dr. Roscoe Eckelberry (1891-1966) was a professor of the Bureau of Educational Research and editor of the Educational Research Bulletin at Ohio State University. After his retirement from the University, he researched the social and economic impact of the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District throughout the 1960s with the intention of publishing a full history of the District. However, he did not complete the manuscript in his lifetime. It was later condensed and edited by Hal Jenkins, who published it in 1976 through the Kent State University Press as "Valley Renewed: History of Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District." The Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District was created in 1933 to address flood control in Ohio, which included water and soil conservation. More than twenty federal, state, and county agencies cooperated with the District in developing the program.

 Scope and Contents

The Roscoe Eckelberry Research on the Muskingum Watershed Conservatory contains research materials of Eckelberry, a professor in the Bureau of Educational Research at Ohio State University, which was gathered into a draft for a book he planned to name "The History of the Muskingham Watershed Conservancy District." The research focuses on the history of the Muskingum Watershed Conservatory, and includes many original or copies of publications produced by the District or its Board of Trustees, including pamphlets, brochures, a lodge dedication invitation, annual reports, plans, and other official documents. The collection contains correspondence, documents related to the Ohio State University Natural Resources Institute, copies of bills and resolutions regarding the District, and annotated drafts of The History of the Muskingham Watershed Conservancy District," separated by chapters. The collection also contains interviews Eckelberry had with individuals involved with the District, recorded on phonograph records.
