Historical Note
During the late 18th-early 19th centuries, the Virginia Military District was a large section of land claimed by Virginia in the Northwest Territory that would later become part of Southwest Ohio. The lands were used as payment to Revolutionary War veterans from Virginia, with the first settlement in 1790 at Massie’s Station. After Virginia returned the remaining unclaimed land to the United States government, the land was given to the State of Ohio. In 1872, the income from the sale of these lands was used by the Ohio legislature to create an endowment for the Ohio State University, which had been founded two years earlier as the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College.

This collection contains ledgers, account books, correspondence, contracts, and other legal and administrative records dealing with the Ohio State University's purchase and sales in the Virginia Military District.
