Historical Note

Professor Joseph Bradford was appointed as the first Ohio State University Architect in 1911. Prior to this time, a new University Architect was appointed each time a construction project was planned. Until 1954, the Architect had a broad range of responsibilities, designing mechanical and architectural structures as well as managing their construction. Thereafter the office started taking on more contractor coordinating responsibilities and moved to the Physical Facilities Building. In 1994, the University Architect's Office became the Office of the University Architect and Physical Planning. As of 2017, Ohio State University employed a University Architect under the Assistant Vice President of Facilities Operations and Development.
