Historical Note

The University Women's Club of The Ohio State University began as the "Woman's Faculty Club of the Ohio State University" in 1895. Founded by Flavia Canfield, it included the wives of the faculty at the university. The club focused on expanding the social opportunities of students and giving them opportunities to get to know the faculty and their wives. It changed its name to the University Women's Club sometime before 1920. The club was involved in the suffrage movement and with Red Cross efforts on campus during the First World War. The group later expanded its membership to include the Greater Columbus community and expanded its mission to provide scholarships to women at Ohio State University.

Scope and Contents

The University Women's Club Records contain minutes, reports, publications, photographs, correspondence, histories, constitutions, membership and mailing lists, yearbooks, and scrapbooks. The collection contains several series that pertain to specific interest groups within the UWC, such as the Music Group, Literature Group, Thursday Morning's Quilters, and others. Specific publications in the collection include cookbooks, newsletters, annual and treasurer’s reports, event programs, and directories. The collection also includes audiocassettes of an oral history of the University Women's Club Music Group, a 1975 audiotape recording of a May luncheon, a 1974 audiotape recording discussing early UWC history, and 1950 recordings of discussions on the early history of the UWC on phonographic records.
