The Ohio State University Freshman Class Council was formed in 1951, with the name being changed to Freshman Senate in 1959. Membership was initially limited to any freshman not involved in a fraternity or sorority, but later changed to membership via election. Sophomore students from the prior year served as executives on the Freshman Senate until yearly elections were held during the winter quarter, at which time they would step down to be replaced by new freshmen officers. The Freshman Senate sponsored social events, raised money for charitable causes, and encouraged voting in both campus and general elections. They also sponsored spring "orientations" to help incoming freshmen get used to campus prior to actual orientation, and provided assistance to freshmen having trouble adjusting to college life. The Freshman Senate was ended in 1991 due to a lack of participation and funding.
The Ohio State University, Freshman Senate Records date from circa 1970s, and contain administrative materials such as directories, constitutions, and receipts from the Freshman Senate.
