The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919; it is a nonprofit organization made up of American veterans who served at least one day of active duty during wartime who were honorably discharged or are still serving honorably. The group organizes events commemorating veterans, provides assistance at Veterans Affairs hospitals, and lobbies on behalf of veterans and service members in politics. As of 2018, there are over 2 million members in more than 13 thousand local posts worldwide. The posts, or local groups, are organized into 55 different departments: one for each of the 50 United States, as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico, and the Philippines.
A chapter of the American Legion was first organized at the Ohio State University in 1919 as the Ohio State University Post 150. Any student who was a veteran of the armed forces during wartime was allowed to join. The group would advocate for veterans on campus, sponsor intramural teams, hold social gatherings, and support currently enlisted members of the armed services. Post 150 ceased to exist in 1925; due to low attendance at that time, student members joined Franklin Post No. 1, a group for former service members in Franklin County. A second attempt at forming a post on campus was made in 1931 by the faculty and administration, which was called Post 310. Student veterans were also welcome in this group. It was active through approximately 1990.
