 Historical Note

The Alcyone Literary Society was the first literary society formed at the Ohio State University in 1874. Its motto was "Fabri Fabricando Fimus." It was initially called the Deshler Society, in recognition of its first benefactor John G. Deshler, who later requested the name be changed to the Alcyone Literary Society. Members of Alcyone participated in oratorical contests, debates, and in public speaking opportunities in front of fellow members. The Alcyone Literary Society competed in oratorical contests against the Horton Literary Society, which had been formed by several former Alcyone members. In 1881 Alcyone and the Horton Literary Society established The Lantern, the Ohio State University student newspaper. Alcyone was active through at least 1906, but was disbanded by 1910. An attempt was made to revive the organization in the form of an English club that took the name Alcyone Literary Society in 1923 and 1924, but it was ultimately unsuccessful.

 Scope and Contents

The Ohio State University, Alcyone Literary Society Records contain programs for several of the society's anniversaries, commencement, and oratory contests versus the Horton Literary Society. Materials date from 1883 to 1891.
