Historical Note

The Horton Literary Society was a student organization for both male and female students at the Ohio State University. It was founded in 1874 as the second literary society on campus; the Alcyone Literary Society was the first, and Horton often had a friendly rivalry with the other group. The purpose of Horton was to provide an opportunity to improve writing and speaking skills. At their regular meetings, members would perform music, give impromptu speeches, read essays, and participate in debates. Their motto was "Per Angusta ad Augusta," or in English, "Through difficulties to honors." In 1881 Horton and Alcyone established The Lantern, the Ohio State University student newspaper. The Horton Literary Society was disbanded in 1904; an attempt was made to revive it by combining with the Alcyone in 1905, but the idea never took off.
