 Historical Note

The Ohio State University’s Earthday Society was a student organization operating circa 1970-1972. Shortly after the organization of the first Earth Day events at Ohio State, the Earthday Society was formed as a response to "an ever pressing need to perpetuate [a] feeling of concern about the environment." The Society separated into several research groups, one of which became involved with selecting participants for a project called “Student-Originated Studies,” funded by the National Science Foundation and facilitated by the Ohio State University Research Foundation. The project involved researching alternatives to pesticides affecting corn crops in Central Ohio. The researchers presented their findings at a display at the Ohio State Fair in 1971.

 Scope and Contents

The Earthday Society Records contain administrative files, exhibit material, photographs, 16mm films, and a magnetic video recording. The materials were created between 1970 and 1977. The majority of the collection pertains to a research project called "Student-Originated Studies," facilitated by the Ohio State University Research Foundation. The collection contains exhibit materials that the Society used to show the results of the study at the Ohio State Fair. Some materials in this collection were also acquired by the Society in response to the United States' first national Earth Day.
