Historical Note

The Ohio State University has had some sort of organization related to forensics or speech and debate on campus since at least 1874. The names "Forensic Society" and "Speech and Debate Team" were often used interchangeably while referring to multiple student organizations, among them the Alcyone and Horton Literary Societies, the State University Debating League team, Delta Sigma Rho (the National Honorary Forensics Fraternity), Sigma Delta Phi (women's speech arts sorority), and Forum (men's honorary public speaking fraternity).

In 1949, an organization dubbed the OSU Forensics Society was officially created, marking the first time the name was used to refer to a specific organization. They held bi-weekly meetings, sponsored lecture series, hosted tournaments and exhibition debates, and travelled to compete in other tournaments and exhibition debates worldwide. The OSU Forensics Society is still active as of 2018 under the name the Speech and Debate Team at the Ohio State University.
