Historical Note

Phi Eta Sigma is a national honor society for college freshmen. It was founded in 1923 at the University of Illinois, and a chapter was organized at Ohio State University on May 5, 1928. The fraternity was organized as a freshman honor society which would reward and encourage academic success. Phi Eta Sigma was originally an all-male society, but eventually became coed.

Throughout its history, Phi Eta Sigma often collaborated with Alpha Lambda Delta, another national freshman honor society that was originally exclusively for women but also became coed in the mid-1970s. As of 2018, the Ohio State University chapters of both organizations are combined as one group referred to as ALDPES, although they remain separate at the national level.
