Historical Note

Civitas Independent Men's Association was founded at the Ohio State University in 1946 by student veterans of World War II to carry out inspections of rooming houses for independent men, or men outside of the Greek fraternity system. The group also provided social activities for members such as dances, intramural sports teams, showing of Ohio State University football game films, and represented independent men on the Student Senate. Together with the female group Pleiades, Civitas made up the Ohio State University branch of the National Independent Students' Association, or NISA. Civitas was disbanded in 1961, due to lack of interest.
