The Swan Club was a student organization at Ohio State University, established in 1927 to encompass all women’s swimming activities. The club participated in competitions and presented synchronized swimming shows. The Cygnet group, a subgroup of the Swan Club, was for beginners who could train to move up into the Swan Club. Around 1954, women’s swimming and diving became a separate team, and circa 1975, synchronized swimming also formed a separate, competitive team. The Swan Club continued until at least 1985. It is not active as of 2018.
The Ohio State University, Swan Club Records contain correspondence, minutes, a program, and other administrative records, dated 1951-1974. They also contain a swimsuit used by Karen Townsend when she was a Swan Club member in the early 1960s.
