<p>Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society, was founded in 1886 at Cornell University; it is a Greek honor society for people involved in the sciences. Members are chosen via nomination. The national organization publishes the bimonthly magazine
                <emph render="italic">American Scientist.</emph> As of 2018, there are approximately 529 chapters worldwide and nearly 284,000 members worldwide.</p>
<p>The Ohio State University Chapter of Sigma Xi was founded in 1898, and is the eighth oldest chapter. Initially, it was known as "Omega Chapter, Society of the Sigma Xi," due to the visual similarity between Ohio's "O" and the Greek letter Omega; this process of naming chapters was quickly abandoned in favor of using geographical or university names so there would not be conflict between chapters who wanted the same chapter letter. Sigma Xi awards six Grants-in-Aid of Research (GIAR) to Ohio State University members each year, to promote scientific research. The Ohio State University Chapter hosts many programs such as the monthly Science Cafe seminar series, Meet a Scientist outreach program for area schools, Suds and Science research tour and discussion programs, and other local outreach. They are active as of 2018.</p>
