            <abstract id="ref1" label="Abstract">J. Love Benton was an undergraduate member of the Afrikan Student Union, a Black activist organization that held an eight-day sit-in at Bricker Hall in 1998 to protest the University administration’s then-proposed changes for the Office of Minority Affairs. Because of the sit-in, Benton and other members convinced administrators to halt the rstructuring process and to launch a national search for a new Vice Provost of Minority Affairs.</abstract>

            <head>Scope and Contents</head>
            <p>The J. Love Benton Oral History Transcript and Compact Disc Recording, dated April 5, 2021, contains a transcript and audio recording on compact disc of an oral history interview of J. Love Benton. In it, Benton discusses her time as an undergraduate at Ohio State, from 1997 to 2000. In it, she discusses her involvement and leadership roles in the Afrikan Student Organization, which staged an eight-day sit-in in 1998 protesting the University's proposed restructuring of the then-Office of Minority Affairs.</p>

            <head>[Biographical/Historical] Note</head>
            <p>J. Love Benton was an undergraduate at The Ohio State University from Winter 1997 to June 2000 when she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture. During that time, she was a member of the Afrikan Student Union, an activist organization fighting for Black rights on campus, and she founded Students for Equal Rights and Justice, a group for students who were not Black but who wanted to support the Afrikan Student Union's mission.</p>
