Biographical Note

Bryan Keith Knedler graduated from the Ohio State University in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts, and 1986 with a Master of Arts in Art Education. While in school, he was involved in the Ohio State University Gay Alliance, and served as both vice president and public relations director of the group. Following his time at the Ohio State University, Knedler studied law at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. He was the state of Maryland's first openly gay mayor when elected in 2002. As of 2021, Knedler serves on the city council in Mount Rainier, Maryland.

Scope and Contents

The Bryan K. Knedler Papers, dated 1979-2003, consist of buttons, correspondence, photographs, a poster, and other ephemera documenting Knedler's involvement in the Ohio State University Gay Alliance while he was a student, as well as his involvement in Scarlet and Gay, the LGBTQ Alumni Society.

In an interview Bryan K. Knedler describes his time at Ohio State as a student leader and organizer in the Gay Alliance. In particular, he discusses how helped push the organization from a focus on social gatherings to activism. He also describes the various projects on which he worked for the group, such as setting up a telephone hotline, participating in freshman orientation, and speaking to various classes on gay issues.
