Ako Kambon was at student at The Ohio State University from 1969-1973; he was involved in the creation of Afro-Am. As a leader of the organization, Kambon presented a list of demands to the Ohio State University administration in 1970 to improve conditions on campus for Black students. After several charged meetings, Kambon was expelled for one academic year under the University’s disruption rule. Kambon later returned after his expulsion to finish his degree. Following college, he was involved in local politics. He eventually founded the Visionary Leaders Institute (VLI), which began through his leadership of the State Commission on African American Males.
The Ako Kambon Oral History Transcript and Compact Disc Recording, dated August 19, 2019, contains a transcript and audio recording on compact disc of an oral history interview of Ako Kambon. In it, Kambon discusses his time as a student at the Ohio State University from 1969-1973, including his involvement in the creation of Afro-Am, an activist organization furthering rights of Black students on campus. As leader of the organization, Kambon presented a list of demands to the Administration in 1970 to improve conditions on campus for Black students. After several charged meetings, Kambon was expelled for one academic year under the University’s disruption rule. Kambon later returned after his expulsion to finish his degree.
