James B. Baer studied mechanical engineering at the Ohio State University from 1965 to 1969. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha and on the Equipment team for Block "O" student cheer section. Due to his position on the Equipment team, Baer was on the field at Ohio Stadium during the halftime of the Ohio State University versus Minnesota football game on October 30, 1965, which was the first appearance of mascot Brutus Buckeye. Baer was able to take one of few known photographs of this first iteration of Brutus. As of 2020, he has published one book.
