Biographical Note

Mabel G. Freeman earned three degrees from the Ohio State University: an undergraduate degree in secondary education and English in 1966, a graduate degree in guidance counseling in 1975, and a doctorate in education policy in 1988. She began working at the Ohio State University part-time in the early 1970s, and held several roles before she helped establish the Ohio State University Honors and Scholars program in 1985, and led the program for 15 years. Freeman placed emphasis on recruiting and retaining high-ability undergraduates.

Freeman became the Vice President of Undergraduate Admissions and First Year Experience in 2000; she and her staff created the First Year Experience (FYE) program, which is responsible for freshman orientation, President’s Convocation, Buckeye Book Community, Distinguished Speaker Series and other programs for first year students. She retired from this position in 2012. Honors received by Freeman include Ohio State University's Distinguished Service Award (2015) and having the Ohio State chapter of the Mortar Board Honor Society named after her in 2003. As an undergraduate, she was a member of the 1965 Mortar Board class, and in her capacity as an Ohio State University administrator, she served as an advisor to the local chapter as well as the 20th Mortar Board National President.
