Josephine "Jo" Sitterle Failer (August 19, 1910-December 18, 1987) graduated from the Ohio State University's College of Pharmacy in 1939. She was very active in the College of Pharmacy's alumni association, and served on many boards and committees at the Ohio State University, including the Alumni Association's Board of Directors and Executive Board, the Alumnae Scholarship Houses Advisory Board, the Ohio State Alumni Council, the Friends of the OSU Libraries, and the University Hospitals Board. During her lifetime, Failer raised more than $105,000 for Ohio State University organizations by co-sponsoring the Greater Columbus Antique Show and Sale. Failer received the Ohio State Distinguished Service Award in 1964, the Alumni Centennial Award in 1970, the Ralph D. Mershon Award in 1984, and an honorary Doctorate of Humanities Award, presented a week before her death in 1987.
Following her death, Failer's dedication to the Ohio State University was remembered through the Josephine Sitterle Failer Alumni Award through the College of Pharmacy, a fund for assistance to students in Alumnae Scholarship Housing, and the OSU Alumni Association's Josephine Sitterle Failer Award for volunteer service to students.
The Jo Failer Papers date from 1939 until 1987, and contain service awards, honorary degrees, photographs, and information about the Failer Award, named for Jo Failer.
