 Biographical Note

James L. “Jim” Jones (born June 23, 1936) was the athletic director at Ohio State University from 1987 to 1994. Jones was appointed as the sixth athletic director of the University. Jones started his career at Ohio State as an instructor of physical education in 1965 until 1967, where he then served as the athletic counselor until 1970. Before his appointment to athletic director, Jones served as the senior associate athletic director in until 1977. He was elected the first vice president of the National Association of College Directors of Athletics in 1991. Jones was awarded with the title of athletic director emeritus in 1994; in the same year, he was given the Mr. Ohio Gold Award by the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame.

The James L. Jones Oral History Transcript and Audiocassette Recording contain an interview of Jones conducted by Henry L. Hunky on January 9, 2001. In this oral history, Jones discusses his time as the Athletic Director at the Ohio State University, his relationship with Woody Hayes, how athletics have changed over the years, and the impact of Title IX on collegiate athletic programs.
