Having grown up in Wheeling, West Virginia, William J. Mitsch originally pursued a career in engineering until he attended an Earth Day event and decided to return to graduate school to earn a doctorate in enivironmental engineering sciences. He was hired by Ohio State's School of Natural Resources in 1986 and several years later decided to create a wetlands park. The Wilma H. Schiermeier Olentangy River Wetland Research Park, the first of its kind on a university campus, opened in 1994. In 2012 Mitsch led a successful effort to prevent Columbia Gas from laying a pipeline through the ORWRP. That year Mitsch retired from Ohio State and became Eminent Scholar and Director of the Everglades Wetland Research Park at Florida Gulf Coast University. He retired from that position in 2022.
