 [Biographical/Historical] Note

Paul Allen Beck was chairman of the Department of Political Science, then Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Beck first served on the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh from 1970 until 1979 when he was hired to start a new program in Policy Science at Florida State University. After eight years in Florida, Beck’s reputation as an administrator had grown enough that Ohio State recruited him to become chairman of its Department of Political Science, a position he held from 1991-2004. He then served as Dean for four years. Beck retired in 2012.

 Scope and Contents

The Paul Allen Beck Oral History Transcript and Compact Disc Recording, dated May 11, 2021, contains a transcript and audio recording on compact disc of an oral history interview of Beck. In it, Beck discusses his tenure both as chairman of the Department of Political Science, from 1991-2004, and Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, from 2004-2008. He describes his work in these roles as both challenging and rewarding, and he also discusses his research and other University service.
