 Biographical Note

Lucy Venable came to Ohio State University in 1968, where she taught in the Department of Dance. She founded the Dance Notation Bureau Extension for Education and Research and served as its director for 12 years. Venable retired in 1992.

 Scope and Contents

The Lucy Venable Oral History Transcript and Audiocassette Recordings contain a transcript and audiocassettes of an oral history interview with Lucy Venable conducted by Nena Couch on August 29, 2002. Interview discussion topics include labanotation and other dance notation systems, including the role of the Dance Notation Bureau, the development of "Effort Shape" concept on dance movement, the development of a nationally recognized dance program at Ohio State University, and Labananalysis Research Workshops at Ohio State University.
