            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Edward Orton, Sr. (1829-1899) was the first president of Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College (later The Ohio State University). He served as president from 1874 to 1881. He resigned to devote his time to teaching in the geology department and serve as state geologist.</p>

            <p>The Edward Orton Sr. Papers contain addresses and articles by Orton, a Hamilton College commencement program, and 
                <emph render="italic">The Place of Man in Nature</emph>, a holograph manuscript written by Orton. The collection also contains several certificates of appointment of Orton as state geologist.</p>
