 Biographical Note

John E. Corbally (1924-2004) came to Ohio State University in 1955 as an assistant professor of education. He became director of the personnel budget in 1959 and executive assistant to President Novice G. Fawcett in 1961. In 1962 he was also appointed secretary of the President's Cabinet and the Administrative Council. He was named the Vice President for Administration in 1964. In 1966, he became Vice President and Provost for Academic Affairs. Corbally left Ohio State University in 1969 to become the eighth chancellor and president of Syracuse University. He later served as the president of the University of Illinois from 1971 to 1979.

 Scope and Contents

The John E. Corbally Papers contain budget, personnel and council reports, memos, correspondence, and other administrative files, mostly from the time period in which Corbally served as Ohio State University's director of the personnel budget, Executive Assistant to President Novice G. Fawcett, secretary of the President's Cabinet, and Vice President of Administration. This collection also contains an oral history interview transcript and audiotapes of John E. Corbally, conducted by Robert Butche on March 7 and 10, 2002. Interview discussion topics include the closing of University School, the creation of the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, OSU President Novice Fawcett, the controversy over the Speaker's Rule, and Corbally's career as a faculty member and administrator.
