Historical Note

The Centennial Committee was formed by Ohio State University President Novice G. Fawcett in 1967. The committee, representing all the major units and interest groups of the university, was tasked with planning the celebration of Ohio State University's 100th anniversary in 1970. At the end of the centennial year, 100 Centennial Achievement Awards were presented to distinguished alumni, faculty, and staff members. The Centennial Photo Contest, sponsored by the Ohio Staters, was also part of the year's celebrations. The Committee was chaired by Dr. Al Garrett, who was previously working as a Vice President under President Fawcett. Bruce Harding, University Archivist, served as the secretary of the Centennial Committee. Robert Esmond, the Assistant Director of the Office of University relations, was also a committee member that served on a separate Centennial Dedication Committee.

Scope and Contents

The Ohio State University, Centennial Committee Records contain photographs of various campus scenes taken by participants in the Centennial Photo Contest, a centennial plaque, a resolution by the Ohio Legislature, and correspondence, press releases and other administrative files on the involvement of the state and other government officials in the centennial events. The collection also includes two series containing the files from committee members Robert Esmond and Bruce Harding. These series contain meeting minutes, correspondence, and other planning files. The collection dates from 1965-1970.
