 Historical Note

The Centennial Committee was formed by Ohio State University President Novice G. Fawcett in 1967. The committee, representing all the major units and interest groups of the university, was tasked with planning the celebration of Ohio State University's 100th anniversary in 1970, and with discussing what the University's goals for the next 100 years would be. Frederick Stecker served as the centennial coordinator and headed up the Centennial Office, which was set up in the Mershon Auditorium. Each college was assigned the task of creating their own centennial programs and many produced written histories. At the end of the centennial year, 100 Centennial Achievement Awards were presented in the form of a medallion to distinguished alumni, faculty, and staff members.

 Scope and Contents

The Ohio State University, Centennial Office Records contain administrative files and memorabilia related to the 1970 100th anniversary celebration of Ohio State University, dated from 1957 to 1971. Files include publicity items such as fliers, programs, itineraries, and a poster, budgets, committee notes, press releases, clippings, and other files related to planning centennial events and programs. There are also files on the nomination of 100 centennial achievement awards given out by the office in 1970. Centennial memorabilia in the collection includes glassware, coins, placemats, medallions, and other artifacts. The collection also includes a scrapbook and bound copies of the Centennial Histories published by various academic units on campus.
