In 1952, the Committee on Interlibrary Cooperation, sponsored by the College and University Library Sections of the Ohio College Association and the Ohio Library Association, was established to to study the feasibility of a cooperatively operated centralized library service in Ohio. By 1965, the study and actions of the committee were known as the Ohio College Association Library Cooperation Project. In 1967, the project culminated in the establishment of the Ohio College Library Center (OCLC). The center was a non-profit, regional library center that served as a source of shared bibliographic information and provided library services. Frederick G. Kilgour was the Center's first director, and the organization operated under a Board of Trustees through at least 1972. For its first 10 years, OCLC membership only included institutions in Ohio. In 1978, membership was opened to institutions in other states, and in 2002, OCLC began accepting members from outside the United States. As of 2018, OCLC, now known as the Online Computer Library Center, is still active. It maintains WorldCat, the largest online public access catalog in the world, and provides other library management services that contribute to community resource sharing.
The Ohio College Library Center Records contain photocopies of correspondence and committee meeting minutes documenting the formation of the Ohio College Library Center (OCLC), and letters declining the position of the Center's library directorship from library professionals around the United States. The collection also includes OCLC Board of Trustees minutes and related correspondence, memberships lists and correspondence with potential members, and a proposed 1972 agreement with the New England Library Information Network marking the beginning of the Center's growth outside Ohio. The collection materials date from 1967-1972, though originals of photocopied materials date from 1952.
