Historical Note
In 1970, the Faculty Council of Ohio State University appointed a committee to propose a structure of a University Senate, a policy-making body responsible only to the Board of Trustees. Members of the original committee included Charles Hoffman, director of the Department of German; Robert Arns, Vice Provost of Arts and Sciences; and Richard Bohning, dean of Biological Sciences. After a long debate, the University Senate was officially created on July 7, 1972, and "delegated the legislative authority of the University faculty over education and academic policy."
Scope and Contents
The Ohio State University, Ad Hoc Committee on University Senate Records contain three sets of files from three committee members: Charles Hoffman, Robert Arns, and Richard Bohning. The files contain various drafts of proposals, correspondence, memos, magnetic audio tape recordings, and clippings, all dealing with the formation of a new University Senate, which the committee was tasked with structuring. Bohning's files also contain materials on the Committee of Twenty-Six. The collection materials date from 1969 to 1972.
