The Ohio State University Committee for Rehabilitation of University Hall was formed in 1970 in response to University President Fawcett's plan to tear down University Hall, one of the oldest buildings on campus. Paul M. Herbert, a former Ohio Supreme Court Justice, was named as committee chairman, and faculty member Ralph Woodin served on the committee. The Hall was built in 1871, shortly after the establishment of Ohio State University. Although there was widespread alumni interest in preserving University Hall and the issue was debated for several months, reconstruction was approved by the Board of Trustees in 1971.
