Historical Note

The Ohio State University Committee on Rights and Responsibilities was created in 1968 at the charge of University President Novice G. Fawcett. Its principal purpose was to “undertake a campus-wide inquiry into policies and procedures concerning student and faculty protests and demonstrations.” Although formed in response to campus demonstrations, its "primary obligations extended to proposing future policies, not to hearing or deciding recent cases." It did however, make recommendations about the charges of trespass against students related to recent campus demonstrations that were pending in city courts.

Scope and Contents

The Ohio State University, Committee on Rights and Responsibilities Records contain minutes, memos, legislative research, reports, notes and survey results. These materials relate to the formation of rights and responsibilities statements for various groups on campus, research on discipline structures in other universities, and documentation pertaining to the creation of the committee under University President Novice Fawcett.
