The Committee on Academic Freedom and Responsibility was established at Ohio State University around 1975. It consisted of six faculty members from the University Senate and two graduate teaching, research, or administration associates. The committee heard "procedural issues relative to promotion, tenure, and renewal," studied factors affecting academic freedom and made recommendations to the University Senate, and heard and investigated "complaints by individual faculty of alleged infringement on academic freedom." As of 2017, this committee was called a council and still operated in the University Senate.
The Ohio State University, Committee on Academic Freedom and Responsibility Records contain correspondence, letter templates, notes, and other documentation used to review tenure cases, including faculty evaluations. The collection also includes minutes, memos to the University Senate, a proposed policy on student access to materials submitted to meet course requirements, a proposed policy on faculty evaluations, and final reports on the repeal of tenure cases. The collection materials date from 1975 to 1978.
