 Historical Note

The Department of Industrial Design established itself at Ohio State University in 1973. Ohio State University began offering courses in elementary and intermediate design in 1920. In 1940, the Department of Fine Arts began to expand on design majors and courses and offered the major of product design. Then, in 1959, product design renamed itself to industrial design. Charles Wallschlaeger, Chairman of the Division of Design in 1972, proposed the notion for Industrial Design to become a separate department, which finalized in 1973. In its later years, the Department of Industrial Design initiated a change of name: the Department of Industrial, Interior, and Visual Communication Design.
