Historical Note
During the 1930's and 1940's, the student dance performance group of Ohio State University was called Orchesis. It was sponsored in a Dance Division of the Women's Division of the Department of Physical Education. In the 1950's, under the leadership of Helen P. Alkire, Orchesis changed its name to The Ohio State University Dance Group (UDG). In 1968 the group became the University Dance Company (UDC). The Division of Dance was created in 1968 under the College of the Arts, where it offered Bachelor of Fine Art degrees in dance performance and dance education and a Master of Arts in dance. The Dance Notation Bureau Extension was also established in 1968 to facilitate education in Labanotation and preserve dance documentation. Effective July 1, 1973, the OSU Board of Trustees granted the Division of Dance departmental status. Helen P. Alkire served as the first chairman of the new Department of Dance.
