 Historical Note

The Department of Zoology is a former department at the Ohio State University. While the department had been established since the university’s opening in 1870, zoology, as of 2017, only exists as a major option for undergraduate students. At the beginning of its history, zoology was considered to be a branch of veterinary sciences. The department originally established was not solely labeled the “department of zoology,” but rather as the Department of Zoology and Veterinary Science, which opened in 1870. The department described itself as the study of “beasts, birds, fishes, and insects,” which were included in the curriculum of zoology. Zoology branched away from veterinary science and established a separate department known as the Department of Zoology and Entomology in 1891, which was then placed into the College of Agriculture in 1896. The department remained in the College of Agriculture until 1966, where it became a part of the College of Biological Sciences. After the departments moved, zoology and entomology separated. The Department of Zoology was established in 1968. The Department of Zoology saw little change until 1998, when the department was absorbed into the Department of Evolution, Ecology and Organismal Biology in the College of Arts and Sciences. Since the merge, zoology has become an undergraduate major program, as well as a minor program.
