The Ohio State University, College of Biological Sciences was created in 1966; the Department of Microbiology was added to the college at this time. The Department of Microbiology had existed as a major program at the university since around 1935 under the College of Arts and Sciences as the Department of Bacteriology. The name was changed to the Department of Microbiology in 1961.
