Historical Note
When the Department of Zoology and Veterinary Science was established in 1870, the study of “beasts, birds, fishes, and insects” were included in the curriculum of zoology. Zoology branched away from veterinary science and established a separate department known as the Department of Zoology and Entomology in 1891. The Department of Zoology and Entomology was placed into the College of Agriculture in 1896. The department remained in the College of Agriculture until 1966, where it became a part of the College of Biological Sciences. After the movement, zoology and entomology separated into their own departments, and the Department of Entomology was officially established in 1968. As of 2017, the Department of Entomology offers undergraduate major programs in entomology, plant health management, and an entomology minor program, as well as graduate programs.
