 Historical Note

The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures (NELC) began in 1967 when Ohio State University first offered Hebrew and Arabic as foreign languages under the former Department of Romance Languages. In 1973, the university offered undergraduate major programs in Arabic and Hebrew. A year later, the Hebrew program became independent of the Department of Romance Languages and Ohio State University began offering an undergraduate degree in Islamic Studies, which helped contribute to the establishment of NELC. The Department of Judaic and Near Eastern Languages and Literatures, or JaNELL, formed in 1979. JaNELL offered Arabic, Hebrew, and Islamic Studies, as well as Modern Greek, Persian, Turkish, and Yiddish. JaNELL was renamed to the Department of Near Eastern, Judaic, and Hellenic Languages and Literatures in 1992. However, after Yiddish and Modern Greek programs were transferred to the Department of German and Department of Classics (respectively) in 2000, the Department of Near Eastern, Judaic, and Hellenic Languages and Literatures was renamed to the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures. As of 2018, the department is still active.
