 Historical Note

Classes on the subject of philosophy were initially offered under the School of Letters at Ohio State University in 1873, when the university first opened to student enrollment. These courses were not considered to be philosophy, but regarded as logic. In 1879, the Board of Trustees ruled to create the Department of History and Philosophy. Philosophy and psychology were a combined division at this time; it wasn’t until 1907 that psychology separated and became its own formal department. This movement made philosophy a separate division and, in 1909, it became a formal department.
