 Historical Note

The Department of Economics was established at Ohio State University in 1895. Ohio State University began offering a course in economics in 1875, called “Political Economy and Civil Polity.” In 1899, the Department of Economics underwent change when the department merged with sociology, creating the Department of Economics and Sociology. In 1916, the Department of Economics and Sociology was placed under the College of Commerce and Administration, the same year in which that college was founded. Under the College of Commerce and Administration, the Department of Economics and Sociology split in order to become their own separate departments in 1921. As of 2017, the Department of Economics is housed within the College of Arts and Sciences, offering undergraduate and graduate degrees.
