The Center for Vocational and Technical Education opened at Ohio State University in 1965. The stated objectives of the Center included community, research, international, and program outreach to incorporate vocational and technical education. The United States Office of Education labeled the Center as the National Center for Research in Vocational Education in 1977; the Center held this title until 1987. In this year, the Center changed its name to the Center on Education and Training for Employment (CETE) and also merged into the College of Education. The National Center for Research in Vocational Education then moved to the University of California, Berkeley, in 1988. In 2013, the Center for Learning Excellence (CLEX) and the Center for Special Needs Populations (CSNP) merged with the Center on Education and Training for Employment. As of 2017, CETE still operates under the College of Education and Human Ecology.
