Historical Note

The Ohio State University original dairy plant was built in 1898 and located in the Townshend Hall basement. The initial objective of the plant was to supply the campus with milk while facilitating a dairy apprenticeship program. In 1911 the university began to practice pasteurization and slowly modernized the facility, producing other types of dairy products. The plant became a part of the Department of Dairy Technology, known as the University Dairy, functioning as a research and training laboratory and demonstration center. The plant was phased out beginning in 1973.
