 Historical Note

In 1896 the Department of Domestic Economy was established at Ohio State University, later becoming a Department and then School of Home Economics. Institution Management became part of the curriculum of the school, and a household equipment laboratory was built in 1928, beginning a long history of research in household equipment at Ohio State University. In 1932 a home management house was built on campus to facilitate teaching in Home Management. By 1969, the School of Home Economics had five different divisions, one of which was Home Management. In 1975 they became departments, and Home Management was called the Department of Home Management and Housing. In 1983 the School of Home Economics became a College, and in 1985 the Department of Home Management and Housing was renamed the Department of Family Resource Management. In 1995, it merged with the Department of Textiles and Clothing to become the Department of Consumer and Textile Sciences.

 Scope and Contents

Ohio State University, Department of Family Resource Management Records contain guest, scheduling and expense ledgers, scrapbooks, and other files about the policies, history and architectural planning of the School of Home Economics' Home Management Houses on campus, dated 1919 to circa 1992. The collection also includes administrative files from the Department of Family and Resource Management, such as correspondence, photographs, curriculum, and workshops. There are also several files in the collection on the history of the Division of Household Equipment, its laboratory, and research in this field at the University.
