 Historical Note

The Department of Dairying at the Ohio State University opened in 1906, though courses in dairy farming had been offered before that time in the College of Agriculture and Domestic Science. Students representing the department began presenting their dairy products at the National Dairy Show held in different locations around the country. The department became the Department of Dairy Technology in 1929. In 1948, it became the Department of Dairy Science, and was associated with the dairy department at the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station in Wooster. Dairy Science Hall of Service Awards were given beginning in 1960 for notable contributions to the dairy industry, and were still awarded as of 2016. In 1994, during the reorganization of the College of Agriculture, the Department of Dairy Science became part of the Department of Animal Sciences.

The Ohio State University, Department of Dairy Science Records contain lists of scholarships and Hall of Service recipients, an annual report and other publications, a National Dairy Show medal, and clippings about the dairy show. The materials are dated 1894-1993.
