 Historical Note

The Ohio State University first began offering courses in Chemical Engineering in 1903, with an official “Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering” degree added in 1904. Prior to 1924, chemical engineering was a division of the chemistry department; at that time it became its own department, the Department of Chemical Engineering. It was one of the first 10 schools accredited by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. In 2004, the Department of Chemical Engineering had its name changed to the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and again in 2008 to the William G. Lowrie Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. It is a department within the Ohio State University College of Engineering.

William G. Lowrie (1943-) is an American oil company executive who graduated from the Ohio State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering in 1966. In 2008, Lowrie donated 17 million dollars for the construction of a new chemical and biomolecular engineering and chemistry building. This money was donated in honor of Dr. Joseph H. Koffolt, who was a highly influential department chair from 1948 to 1968, and the building thus bears the name Koffolt Laboratories. However, in recognition of Lowrie’s generosity, the Ohio State University named the William G. Lowrie Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering in his honor; it is the first named department in the University’s history.

The William G. Lowrie Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Records date from 1912 to 2017, and contain annual reports, newsletters, and other publications from the department.
