Historical Note

The Department of Ceramic Engineering, founded by Edward Orton, Jr., was established in 1894, after a House-mandated bill required the development of a department of ceramics. Established as the first of its kind in the United States, the department focused on the “practical instruction” for “clay-workers.” Courses began during the 1894-1895 school year, although only ran and instructed by Orton in Orton Hall. By 1900, Ohio State offered the degree of Engineer of Mines in Ceramics, but changed to Ceramic Engineer in 1907. With the establishment of the department came a need for a larger facility to conduct ceramic research. In 1927, the University built the Engineering Experiment Station. Eventually, in 1967, the Materials Engineering and Science Building was built, housing the Department of Ceramic Engineering. In 1965, the Department of Ceramic Engineering established the Department of a National Refractories Research Center with The Refractories Institute. In May of 1968, the Department of Ceramic Engineering changed its name to the Department of Metallurgical Engineering. By mid- 1986, the department changed back to the Department of Ceramic Engineering. In 1988, the University moved to merge the Department of Ceramic Engineering and the Department of Metallurgical Engineering to create the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. In 2010, the Welding Engineering program transitioned into the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
