The Knowlton School of Architecture is a school within the Ohio State University. Its history traces back to the year 1885 when Ohio State established the Department of Engineering Drawing. In 1888, Ohio State offered a course with the title “Drawing” after Professor Joseph Nelson Bradford suggested the University offer more architecture courses. A Bachelor of Civil Engineering Architecture, a four-year degree program, was developed in 1900. In 1903, architectural studies were placed in Brown Hall. The year 1906 marked the establishment of the Department of Architecture. The first degree of its kind under the Department of Architecture, referred to as “Architectural Engineering,” was offered in 1918. Three years earlier, the department offered the Landscape Architecture degree. This degree program had transferred from the Department of Architecture to the Department of Fine Arts until 1937, when it was offered in the College of Engineering. Architecture was taught in the Department of Architecture and Landscape Architecture in the 1940s. Enrollment for architecture degrees dropped greatly during the Great Depression and World War II. However, in 1947, enrollment sharply increased. Because of the increased enrollment, staff and faculty in the department pushed to change the Department of Architecture and Landscape Architecture to college status in 1949. Instead of reaching college status, it transformed into the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. Between 1986 and 1987, the School of Architecture went back to existing as the Department of Architecture. In 1992, the Department of Architecture changed names again to the School of Architecture. In 1994, the School of Architecture was renamed to the Austin E. Knowlton School of Architecture.
