The Department of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering was established at Ohio State University in 1943. However, while it was authorized for establishment in 1943, the Department’s actual establishment didn't occur until three years later in 1946. This was due to the U.S. involvement in World War II. The Department began to use space in Townsend Hall in 1957, after quartering in the building Engineering Annex B. Two years later, a new establishment, the Civil-Aero Building, housed the department. In the 1950s, the Department established the Aeronautical and Astronautical Research Lab, or AARL. The AARL moved to the Don Scott Airport in 1966. Over the years, AARL improved its facilities with state-of-the-art technology and labs. In 1988, AARL opened the Gas Dynamics and Turbulence Laboratory and, in 1995, opened the Gas Turbine Laboratory. In 2005, the Department split into two separate departments, Aerospace Engineering and Aviation. The Aerospace Engineering Department and the Mechanical Engineering Department merged in 2006 to create a single department, the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
